The man on the steamcar is Shannon O'Hare, aka Major Catastrophe, creator of Neverwas Haul. The name of the steamcar is Kristie's Flyer, named after a friend of one of the other creators of Neverwas Haul, Kimric Smythe, who was responsible for much of the technical/engine work on both the steamcar and the Haul.

Steampunk is extremely popular in the Bay Area (and I think also in Seattle and Portland) to the point of being considered passe. It's still growing, though. There are magazines and conventions. Steampunk fans convened at Comic Con this year to discuss costumes and lifestyle. The online comic "Freakangels" ( www.freakangels.com ) features steampunk heroes in a flooded future London.
